Mammogram

About the Exam
A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray exam that films the internal tissues of your breasts. The mammogram exam is extremely important for the early detection of breast cancer. A mammogram can detect breast cancer in its early stages, when it is more than 90 percent curable.

Mammography uses a special x-ray unit designed exclusively for mammograms.

If you are pregnant or suspect you may be, discuss this with your physician before undergoing this procedure.

Before the Exam
Don’t wear any deodorant or powder because they can leave residues that interfere with the images. You do not need to restrict your diet in any way before this exam. You may wish to schedule the exam with your menstrual cycle in mind to avoid times when you experience breast tenderness.

During the Exam
The technologist positions your breast on the x-ray unit’s image plate, which contains the film. Then, a special device gently compresses, or flattens, your breast to spread the breast tissue and produce a more uniform thickness. As the breast is compressed, you may feel a sensation of pressure or tightness for a few seconds. This may cause mild discomfort. Women differ in the amount of compression they can tolerate, so let your technologist know if the pressure is causing pain. The technologist will take pictures of your breast in slightly different positions. Then the procedure is repeated for the other breast.

The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.

After the Exam
The radiologist evaluates your mammogram and a written report is provided for your records. Rochester Radiology also sends a copy of the results of your exam to your physician.

Screening Mammogram
If you are here for a screening mammogram, we will mail you results of your examination, indicating whether the examination is normal or if you need to return for a follow-up examination or more views.

Diagnostic Mammogram
If you have any problems such as a lump, discharge or pain, we need to know this at the time of your appointment. In this case, we would schedule you for a diagnostic examination. We may take further views immediately or arrange for other examinations or consultations. You will receive results at the time of your exam if you have a diagnostic mammogram.

We encourage you to contact us at any time to discuss your questions and concerns.
