Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

About the Exam
EVLT is a new, minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure for the treatment of varicose veins. It is performed under local anesthesia in our office. The procedure takes about 45 minutes, with minimal pain, no scarring, a quick recovery, and immediate return to normal routines.

EVLT involves first using ultrasound to map out the affected vein and then moving a laser fiber through the affected vein. The laser emits highly targeted energy to seal the vein shut. Heat contracts and permanently blocks the blood vessel being treated, with minimal effects beyond the vessel wall. Closing the vein poses no problem as blood flow is diverted to the many normal veins in the leg.

Before the Exam
You may eat a light breakfast the morning of your procedure. Wear loose-fitting shorts or very loose pants that you can pull on over the leg bandage that will be applied after the procedure.
Take a shower and wash your leg with antibacterial soap (Dial or other brand) the morning of your procedure. Please do not apply any lotions to your leg before your procedure. Prior to the procedure, it may be necessary to shave some hair in your groin region to facilitate the ultrasound probe.
Please review the Patient Informed Consent form and bring it with you on the day of your procedure. We will review it again and ask you to sign it just before the procedure.
You must bring your prescription Class II stockings with you on the day of the procedure. If you fail to bring them, we will have to cancel your appointment and reschedule for another date. If you have questions or problems filling your prescription for the stockings, please contact our office for assistance.

During the Exam
During your EVLT procedure, ultrasound is used to map the vein. Then, under local anesthesia, a catheter is placed in the vein and a laser is passed through the catheter to the top of the vein. After injection of additional anesthesia, the laser is fired, and the catheter is removed. The leg is then dressed with a compression bandage and Class II stocking.

After the Exam
After your procedure, you will wear compression stockings for two weeks. With the exception of heavy exercise, you will be encouraged to walk immediately and can resume all normal activity. If you experience minor soreness and bruising, you can take over-the-counter medication as needed. Periodic ultrasound examinations will confirm that the vein remains closed.

We encourage you to contact us at any time to discuss your questions and concerns.
