DEXA Scan
About the Exam
Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, better known as DEXA scan, is a simple, fast, non-invasive procedure to measure your bone mineral density (BMD). Osteoporosis or thinning of the bones can occur in men and women of all ages. Bone mineral density measurements can help to determine your particular bone status and prediction of fracture risk.
A DEXA scan uses a special x-ray unit to image for BMD and requires an extremely small dose of radiation, less than 1/20 the amount in a chest x-ray. Your lower back and hip will be x-rayed. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, including time for you to ask questions.
Before the Exam
|
| |
Some insurance companies may require prior approval for a DEXA Scan. Please check with your insurance company to determine if prior approval is required and if so, you can arrange this through your primary care physician. |
| |
Please do not take any calcium supplements the day of the exam. For the exam, wear comfortable clothing. You will not need to remove any clothing, but please avoid wearing any items containing metal such as zippers or buttons so that you will not need to change your clothes. Sweatpants or pull-on pants and sweat tops are convenient choices. |
| |
There are no injections with a DEXA scan nor do you need to take any pills or liquids. |
|
|
During the Exam
The x-ray technologist will ask a few history questions and may inquire as to what medications you are taking. The technologist will ask you to lie down on a table so that a few x-ray images can be taken. It is quick and painless, so lie back and relax comfortably.
After the Exam
The radiologist will evaluate your BMD as compared to individuals who are of similar age, weight, sex, and ethnic background. The results of the exam will be sent to your physician to correlate with your medical history.
We encourage you to contact us at any time to discuss your questions and concerns.
